Ch. 56.2

On Friday, Zheng Dingding went to get her medical report. The ultrasound revealed no lesions or abnormalities which was a weight off her mind and she called Xiao Qiong to let her know the results. The latter was happy for her and then asked if she had run into Ning Weijin at the hospital.

‘Nope,’ Zheng Dingding replied categorically before adding, ‘And I don’t want to see him either.’

Come off it¹. Would you have picked his hospital if you truly didn’t want to see him?’

‘I only did so because it’s convenient. They have my medical history so all I need for my physical examination is a scan. If I go to another hospital, who knows how many procedures I might have to go through?’

¹ 口是心非. If you’re not reading this chapter at hiding in plain sight, it has been stolen and reproduced by novelscraping sites.

Zheng Dingding kept walking as she chatted with Xiao Qiong and only after hanging up did she discover that she had taken a wrong turn. Having passed through the big lobby of the outpatient building, she was now in a winding corridor of the in-patient block. Ahead of her was a pond of lotus flowers edged round with trees from which a few yellow and white flowers drifted down whenever the breeze blew. The view was rather pleasant so she stood where she was, taking two deep breaths.

The next moment she heard a voice saying unpleasantly, ‘You again.’

Two short words that conveyed impatience and disgust.

She turned round and sure enough, Shu Yiran was standing in front of her, clad in a white lab coat, wearing light make-up and her hair up in a neat bun.

Standing ramrod straight in the sunshine with her hands in her pockets, Shu Yiran directed a gaze at Zheng Dingding so cold it was piercing.

‘Do you come here for medical treatment or just to look for Ning Weijin?’

‘What does it have to do with you why I’m here at the hospital?’ Zheng Dingding frowned.

Shu Yiran scoffed and commented in a cold, hard voice, ‘I’ve really never seen a female patient like you who uses medical treatment as a pretext to constantly harass a male doctor — are there no men left outside for you to know? Do you have any idea what a negative impact your actions will have on Ning Weijin? If every one of his female patients were like you, madly infatuated with him and chasing him relentlessly, how can he ever go about his work normally?’

‘What right do you have to lecture me about all these?’ Zheng Dingding hit the nail on the head² as she pointed out, ‘Who are you to Ning Weijin anyway?’

² 一針見血. Translation belongs to theresanother(DOT)wordpress(DOT)com.

This retort touched Shu Yiran on the raw and without a second thought she retorted immediately, ‘At least I’ve known him since university. I’m the one who’s been by his side all these years, giving him my support and understanding. I’m the only one who knows what he needs and what’s the most important thing for him! You ask me who I am to him, well, who are you to him then?!’

Her voice broke on the last word and she hastily turned her face aside. After bringing her emotions under control, she turned round to look at Zheng Dingding again. ‘My not wanting you to disturb him has got nothing to do with my personal feelings. I just don’t want to see you drag him down with you. I remember telling you before that your existence will only add a heavy pall of mediocrity to him. You’re simply not good enough for him so why do you keep indulging in wishful thinking?’

Zheng Dingding was just about to rebut this when her gaze travelled past Shu Yiran’s shoulder and locked onto Ning Weijin who was standing behind the latter.

As though sensing something, Shu Yiran turned round quickly and saw him standing nearby.

As the sun was shining in her eyes, she couldn’t quite make out the actual emotions in his eyes. Although her heart was beating fast, she did not explain herself: after all, he had already heard what she had said and she was not going to take back any of it.

‘You know what I need, know what’s most important for me?’ There was no inflection whatsoever in Ning Weijin’s tone and he sounded utterly detached as he continued, ‘That can’t be right because I myself frequently have doubts about what I need and what is actually most important. So how could someone like you know when you have absolutely no relationship with me?’

Shu Yiran stiffened, her hands curling in her pockets. She bit her lip hard, fighting to keep from crying.

‘Dr Shu, we don’t have anything to do with each other other than the fact that we did a course together and work at the same hospital,’ he stated. ‘You have absolutely no right to meddle in my private life, including whom I like and whom I’m going out with. Those are my own choices and my own affair — what business is it of yours?’

Shu Yiran stopped biting her lip and tried her hardest to speak softly. ‘Do you have to insult me like this in front of her?’

‘How is this insulting you? I’m merely telling it like it is and as for her —’ Ning Weijin’s gaze shifted from Shu Yiran to Zheng Dingding as he added evenly, ‘what makes you think that it’s just wishful thinking on her part?’

Shu Yiran’s ears were buzzing painfully and she seemed afraid to look at his tall, well-built figure and coldly indifferent eyes.

‘You have no right to criticise her. To be more accurate, you’re not even qualified to compare with her at all.’

While stating this truth in the starkest terms, Ning Weijin did not look at her at all because his eyes were fixed on Zheng Dingding’s face the whole time.

Shu Yiran’s strength suddenly deserted her and even her legs turned soft — if it weren’t for that last bit of pride holding her up, she would have collapsed already.

‘So this is all I get in return for so many years.’ She let out a bitter laugh abruptly. ‘I don’t even hold a candle to one of your female patients.’

‘That’s your problem, so stop telling me about it.’ Ning Weijin brushed past her after speaking, went over to Zheng Dingding and told her directly, ‘Come with me.’

As Zheng Dingding followed Ning Weijin back out into the corridor, Shu Yiran remained where she was numbly, staring down into the pond of scattered lotus flowers, just like the pieces of her shattered heart.

Ning Weijin led the way out of the in-patient block and stopped at a quiet corner in the common space shared with the outpatient clinic, then turned round and asked Zheng Dingding, ‘Where’s your report? Give it to me.’

She handed the case file to him. He took it, retrieved the medical report and read it seriously.

‘There’s no problem,’ Zheng Dingding said blandly. ‘Can you give it back now?’

He handed the file back to her and commented in a professional tone which contained no trace of compassion, ‘The swelling around your breast and the sharp pain could be caused by an irregular lifestyle and mental stress leading to poor blood circulation or it might be chest wall pain. They might also be obvious symptoms due to poor sleeping posture, deep breathing and coughing.’

‘Are you done?’ She took back her case file, glanced at him and said, ‘I’m leaving.’

‘Zheng Dingding.’

She pricked up her ears.

Ning Weijin spoke slowly, enunciating his words precisely.

‘Why exactly have you been following me? Just so you could explain to me why you chose to remain by the side of that senior of yours?’

‘Yes, I wanted to explain things to you, that was one of the reasons, and also…’ Zheng Dingding spoke with force and conviction, ‘Ning Weijin, I don’t believe that you had no idea why I kept following you around and making sure you ran into me everywhere you went. I also don’t believe that you don’t know what it means when a woman makes lunch for a man.’

Ning Weijin’s dark eyes were gleaming with a welter of emotion, making it impossible to make out what his actual mood was. His voice grew even clearer and calmer as he followed up with a question, ‘What does it mean?’

She inhaled deeply, the twinge of pain around her breast causing her to frown. Shamed into anger, she said hotly, ‘What do you think it means when a woman pursues a man eagerly and keeps doing everything to please him?! Ning Weijin, you know the reason all too well so why keep pretending that you don’t? Fine, since you claim not to know, then I’ll tell you: I kept clinging to you like some pest without any pride or sense of shame; kept running over to talk to you; even got up early one day to make you a vegetable sandwich and bring it to you… Would I have gone to all that trouble³ if it weren’t for just one universally understood reason that’s as clear as day — because I love you!’

‘You love me?’ Ning Weijin only caught these three unfamiliar words and a look of astonished incredulity flashed across his eyes as he demanded in a deep voice, ‘Say that again?’

³ 費周折. Please consider reading from hiding in plain sight rather than from novelscraping sites.

Zheng Dingding had become agitated while speaking and felt a stabbing pain in her chest. Ignoring it, she responded fiercely, ‘I was wrong, it was a slip of the tongue! What I really wanted to say was that I hate you, Ning Weijin, I hate your arrogant, overbearing ways, your doing whatever you want, your conceit and your poker face! I don’t want to see you ever again!’

She spun on her heel after this and, without another look back, stalked off so rapidly that she almost collided with a medicine trolley that was being wheeled out of a corridor. Fortunately, Ning Weijin caught her by the wrist and pulled her back in the nick of time, averting the danger.

It was not until after the medicine trolley had gone past that Zheng Dingding belatedly discovered that they were standing so close together that her body was practically pressed against his warm chest.

Wise Up

Turning round, I notice suddenly
That the city lights are being extinguished
Leaving me to wander up and down alone

★ Maybe your world is too far away
I can’t bridge the gulf
Can’t see any outcome

The one you were thinking about
I could only pretend not to care
Naive enough to think that I still stood a chance

It’s taken so many tears to withstand you
Fooling myself about how it’s not unfair at all
Falling deeply in love in this loneliest game

Thinking I was strong, only to crumble at the first blow
I was willing to lose to you completely
At least I once sincerely
persisted in loving you ★

Repeat ★
Bridge

It’s taken so many tears to leave you
Of listening to so many lies before regretting and giving up
But actually I saw this game of love
For what it was a long time ago

Going to forget your good and your bad
All the hurt, the heartache and the memories
Going to leave it all behind so that I can wise up

At least I once sincerely
persisted in loving you

  1. Damn the song choice got me more than the actual chapter. I feel bad for Shu Yiran, but she needed this wake-up call. There’s a difference between perseverance and obsession, and this line kept getting fainter and fainter for her as time went on.

Yay!! Weijin finally heard what he needed to hear from Dingding!! Hallelujah!!

    1. Haha, yeah, very much her song. I hope she can move on. It’s not like there aren’t any other fish in the sea.

Definitely not what he expected! 😉 Now he’s got some thinking to do.
