After telling himself not to let his feelings run away with him where Song Lin is concerned, Dandan does mental somersaults to conclude that Song Lin is Yu Huan’s reincarnation…

Ch. 22 | The fanboy

‘If I let you go, then whom do I take along to the Guardians’ Tournament?’

Dandan: ‘Oh…’

After two seconds…

‘Eh??!!!!!!’ He scrambled backwards until he was plastered against the window, his eyes huge with surprise. ‘You mean to say… you plan on making a pact with me??? No, no, no, wait a minute… how can you be willing to make a pact with me?? What will happen to Troy then?’

Song Lin questioned, ‘What has Troy got to do with it?’

Dandan processed this rapidly: Can’t be, can’t be; Song Lin became sworn friends with Troy in the Fascinating Forest and Troy is the spirit beast he truly likes, whereas I’m just the spirit beast he can make use of. Maybe my driving off the Gu scorpions increased my usefulness to him and he thinks having me participate in the Guardians’ Tournament will increase his chances of winning. Besides, there’s no rule that says a Guardian can make a pact with only one spirit beast so… maybe making a pact with me isn’t a big deal to him at all. I mustn’t let my feelings run away with me; after all, the more I hope, the more disappointed I’ll be.

Having reached this conclusion, Dandan relaxed and patted Song Lin’s shoulder. ‘I get it, I completely get it.’

Song Lin’s brow knitted slightly. What on earth do you get? Hm?

Back at the Song Manor, Song Lin offered, ‘You can have a day to consider whether you want to make a pact with me. After all, such an arrangement should be based on both of us being willing participants.’

My my, so democratic? How times have changed. It’s certainly more reasonable than Yu Huan’s approach back then.

‘What happens if I refuse?’ asked Dandan.

A poker-faced Song Lin answered, ‘Then I have a hundred ways of getting you to agree.’

Dandan: ‘…’ I take back what I said about your being more reasonable!!!

He headed sulkily to the kitchen. (Yes, the kitchen, don’t ask me why it was the kitchen again; because he could smell the aroma of roasted lamb legs.*)

Styx gazed after his departing back and said very worriedly, ‘Second Master, I think Eldest Master will not agree to your making a pact with this rabbit of dubious background.’

‘I admit that it may not be the right choice but for the first time, it’s the choice my heart desires,’ Song Lin said meaningfully¹, his eyes never leaving Dandan until the latter vanished around a corner. From childhood, his brother had frequently warned him that pretty things were always dangerous but this time, he wanted to find out for himself exactly how dangerous they could be.

Dandan ran into Troy along the long corridor. The latter had only recently recovered from his injuries and still looked a little wan.

Just as Dandan was mentally debating about whether he should greet him, he heard Troy say first, ‘Brother Dan.’

‘… Wha-?’ Dandan’s foot slipped and he almost fell so he hurriedly clutched a nearby pillar for support. ‘You mean… me?’

‘Yes.’

Dandan stroked his chin thoughtfully. Why does that greeting make me feel like a six-foot-tall hero all of a sudden?

‘Calling me by name is fine.’

Troy said, ‘Brother Dandan.’

‘…’ There doesn’t seem to be any difference… Forget it, so be it.

He cocked his head. ‘What’s up?’

‘Well… thank you for saving me back in the Fascinating Forest…’

‘Oh that, I was only there to save Song Lin and happened to rescue you into the bargain,’ Dandan said frankly.

Troy did not mind in the least and even confessed bashfully: ‘When you transformed into a beast to battle the Gu scorpions, your spiritual power was so overwhelming that I had trouble breathing. Then when you roared three times and frightened the scorpions into retreating, the whole forest shook. It was simply… amazing… Ever since my childhood, I’ve always looked up to my tribe’s Elders. As a child, I thought the Elders were tall and intimidating but after seeing you in action, I think you’re even more intimidating.’

Dandan twirled his fringe: Mm, that goes without saying.

‘Brother Dandan, how did you cultivate your power to such high levels? Can you give me some tips?’

‘Our spiritual calibres are innate² and determine your starting line. It’s almost impossible to change. But you’re a Silver-calibre spirit beast so that’s a good foundation and if you make a pact with a powerful Guardian and cultivate slowly, it’s possible to become more powerful.’

After listening to this, the hero worship in Troy’s eyes could well bear comparison to a surging ocean.

Dandan mused inwardly: Hmm… looks like I’ve gained a fanboy after that episode in the Fascinating Forest? Come to think of it, even way back then, he had had more than his fair share of fanboys and fangirls. Why, there had even been spirit beasts of the female variety who had been keen on marrying him and some of them had been real little beauties in human form… but how come nothing had ever come of it in the end?

Now that he thought about it… it seemed as though every beauty who had tried to get close to him had ended up being chased away by Yu Huan… Really, that fool, he just wanted to see me grow old alone, eh? Having thought up to this point, he clapped Troy on the shoulder and said, ‘I’m off to the kitchen first. You need to have faith in yourself. Once you make a pact with Song Lin, you’ll immediately become more powerful.’

Troy said mystified, ‘But Second Master isn’t going to make a pact with me.’

‘Huh?’ Song Lin hadn’t mentioned the matter to Troy?

‘Second Master has never had any intention of making a pact with me. Brother Dandan, have you got the wrong impression somehow?’

‘No need to explain your relationship to me,’ Dandan gave a little wave to indicate that he didn’t want to hear any more. With loose, easy steps, he continued down towards the end of the corridor, two long ears twitching now and then.

Watching him depart, Troy mused: Tsk tsk tsk, that’s a guru for you, even his way of walking is so cool.

Dandan carried a tray of roasted lamb legs back to his bedroom. Song Lin was not at home, apparently having been summoned to the League by his older brother. According to the servant girls, the League had sent men to arrest Dandan, but fortunately he had run away by then so they weren’t able to find him. Song Lin had chased away the colonel from the League and the latter had probably complained to Eldest Master who had thus summoned Song Lin for a dressing-down.

Dandan felt really apologetic: to be honest, he had given Song Lin quite a fair bit of trouble since his arrival. First it was killing the tiger-crocodile, then offending Wanyan Fu and soon after that, offending the League…

Perhaps he should never have left the mountain. Back then, he had only yearned to look for Yu Huan, but now he was starting to feel that the Yu Huan of this life had his own life to lead and he should not intrude on him again. Song Lin was never Yu Huan all along — he didn’t have Yu Huan’s memories and he didn’t have Dandan in his heart.

Dandan fished out the five pages he had torn out of the Ancient Book of Spells and, being bored stiff, began browsing them. It noted that for the one who used the Transmigration Spell, his soul would depart his physical body for twelve double-hours hours on the anniversary of his death.

Wait!

Styx said that Song Lin would lose all his spiritual power on the first day of the fifth lunar month every year. Yu Huan had died in a fire on Dragon Ridge on the twentieth day of the fourth month. The first day of the fifth month was not his death anniversary.

What if… the death anniversary did not mean the day he died but referred to the day of rebirth instead? Supposing it was Yu Huan’s soul which departed Song Lin’s physical body on the first day of the fifth month, then it would perfectly explain the complete loss of his spiritual power.

Dandan’s heart began to hammer excitedly — as long as he stayed by Song Lin’s side, come the first day of the fifth month he might be able… to see Yu Huan. Not his reincarnation, not him reborn, but the true… Yu Huan himself…

Dandan stuffed the papers back under his pillow with a pleasant feeling of ‘the rainbow comes after the storm³’. He had waited far too long, so long that he no longer had any consciousness of it nor anything to show for it. From the fervent zeal of the early days to the force of habit it had become until he was numb from all that blind searching; who the heck knew what he had gone through. Before meeting Yu Huan, he had been used to doing everything alone. Yu Huan’s appearance had been akin to dragging the lone traveller trudging through a world of snow and ice over to a heating stove and slowly, he had become used to there being two of them. Much later, Yu Huan had brought home Phantom and Scythe and Dandan finally got used to the feeling of having a family. Then, out of the blue, Yu Huan died and Phantom and Scythe also left. That was when Dandan realised that the most cruel person was the one who had initially pulled him over to the heating stove to get warm. All he had ever intended was to give you a spot by the fire, but you thought that he wanted to give you a home.

Song Lin returned that evening, looking rather sullen, likely having been read the Riot Act by Eldest Master.

Styx had ordered the servants to prepare the bath so a red sandalwood tub which was for Song Lin’s exclusive use had been filled with steaming hot water.

Dandan did not know that Song Lin was taking his bath. Ever since the latter had introduced his Blood Weapon into Dandan’s body, it was very easy for him to find Song Lin. So when he pushed open the door only to be greeted by the sight of Song Lin’s fair shoulders, he stood and stared for a moment.

‘Ahhh ~!’ This sudden shriek was not from Dandan, nor from Song Lin but from a servant girl who was in attendance.

Dandan: ??

Song Lin: ??

The servant girl covered her face — sorry, sorry, I just got too excited when two men looked at each other…

Song Lin said, ‘That’s enough. You may go.’

‘Yes,’ said the servant girl, thoughtfully shutting the door behind her.

Song Lin ran a wet cloth unhurriedly over his shoulders. ‘Looking for me?’

‘Oh, yes!’ Dandan snapped out of it. ‘You asked me to think about making a pact with you and I’ve considered it.’ He braced both hands on the edge of the tub, the upper half of his body leaning so far into the tub that a certain young master was forced to lean backwards. ‘From this day on, I’m your rabbit,’ declared Dandan, enunciating every word.

  2. Yu Huan chased away Dandan’s suitors? Interesting.

Dandan seriously doesn’t care about the setting does he. He doesn’t feel any shame about disturbing Song Lin’s bath.
    Thanks for the translation!
