Ch. 46.3

Bai Yini laughed. ‘Second Master Song, the reason I’m here today is to let you win the tournament.’

Song Lin’s expression changed. ‘What do you mean by that?’

‘You don’t have to rack your brains for a way to counter my spirit beast’s ability. I can deliberately lose to you at the tournament and let you win the title of Arch-Guardian — on one condition… that you give your spirit beast to me.’

‘My spirit beast?’ Song Lin had an ominous presentiment. ‘My spirit beast is just an ordinary rabbit. It doesn’t make sense for you to deliberately give up the right to compete for the title of Arch-Guardian merely in exchange for him.’

‘I think I may know a bit more about your spirit beast than you do, Second Master Song. He’s not just an ordinary rabbit; he’s the Supreme Jade Rabbit of Dragon Ridge, one of Yu Huan’s bonded spirit beasts and is rumored to have the ability to exterminate an entire tribe all by himself.’

Song Lin was just about to say something when Bai Yini spoke again. ‘No need to be in a hurry to deny it, Second Master. I know you don’t want the League to find out about it. I’m not keen for them to find out either, otherwise how will I get the rabbit for myself? As long as you give me the Jade Rabbit, not only will I keep it a secret, I’ll deliberately lose to you at the tournament. Don’t you think such a deal is worth your while?’

Song Lin laughed grimly. ‘You’re certainly very considerate of me, Miss Bai.’

‘Judging by your tone, you don’t seem to like this deal very much? How about this, I’ll give you a bit more information.’ Bai Yini got up unhurriedly and walked over to Song Lin, placing a fair, slender hand on his shoulder. ‘Your Jade Rabbit may be of Supreme calibre but in terms of spiritual power, he’s a mere shadow of himself compared to Yu Huan’s heyday. Do you know why that is so?’

‘Why?’

‘That huge battle on Dragon Ridge not only ended Yu Huan’s life, it also consumed a lot of that jade rabbit’s strength. To make things worse¹, someone stole over two thirds of his spiritual power while he was unconscious, leaving him with only one third. Although you’ve invested some of your own spiritual power in him and he’s also recuperated some of his own through convalescence, the contrast between his old self when his spiritual power was at its peak and his current self is like heaven and earth.’

Song Lin glanced at her hand and her delicate fingers and couldn’t help frowning slightly.

Bai Yini went on unhurriedly. ‘It’s no exaggeration to say that even if he were the Jade Rabbit in his heyday, it would still be all but impossible to defeat my spirit beast. Unless…’

‘Unless?’

Bai Yini gave a little laugh. ‘Unless you can find a godlike spirit beast yourself, otherwise you won’t be able to defeat me. You’re a clever man, Second Master. If you agree to my condition, we’ll both come away winners: you with the title of Arch-Guardian and I with my jade rabbit. If you don’t agree, you’ll lose badly at the tournament and disgrace your Song clan.’

Song Lin muttered to himself for a while. ‘It sounds like… a deal worth making.’

While negotiations were going on inside, Troy and Dandan were silently leaning against the window outside.

‘What are they saying in there?’ Dandan whispered.

Troy shook his head. ‘I can’t hear clearly either. They seem to be making some kind of a deal.’

Dandan narrowed one eye and peered in through a crack in the window, only to see a delicately built woman with her hand on Song Lin’s shoulder, her graceful figure almost resting on him. Song Lin seemed very pleased with the whole situation, sitting there with his legs crossed.

‘Making a deal, my foot. It’s obvious they’re just making eyes at each other,’ Dandan snorted coldly.

‘Brother Dandan, why not put your ear to the wall, you might be able to hear better that way?’ Troy suggested.

‘Hmm,’ Dandan also felt that this made sense so he turned his body to one side and leaned fully against the wall.

At this moment, the door of the room behind them opened slightly and a gun silently appeared in the doorway, Dandan’s back squarely in its sights. The person holding the gun had a finger on the trigger and seemed ready to pull it at any moment. Troy looked at that gun and then at Dandan, his fingers clenched anxiously. He hesitated irresolutely and just when it seemed like that person would pull the trigger, Troy gritted his teeth and pulled Dandan away by the shoulder. The person holding the gun paused fractionally and then silently withdrew the weapon.

‘What?’ Dandan looked at Troy, puzzled.

‘No-nothing, I thought I saw Second Master walking over… Be careful not to let anyone see you.’

Dandan pulled Troy along with him and they walked to the head of the stairs. He said despondently, ‘Let’s go, let’s go, it’s not like we can hear what’s going on in there, plus that Miss Bai keeps looking at Song Lin so tenderly, I doubt she’s out to harm him. Let’s not disturb them on their date.’

‘… Okay…’ Troy cast a fearful look² at the opposite doorway again. ‘Let’s go quickly then.’

After they had both left, a black shadow came out from the opposite room and disappeared in an instant.

In Bai Yini’s private room, the negotiations were still continuing.

‘Don’t forget, Second Master, that your final goal is the title of Arch-Guardian, not some small rabbit…’ Bai Yini’s voice was soft and gentle but had all the seductive certainty of a mature woman and was extremely persuasive.

‘You have a point, Miss Bai.’ Song Lin rested his head on one hand, his fingers rubbing his temple. ‘That being the case, I agree to the deal.’

Bai Yini looked delighted upon hearing this but before she could speak, Song Lin deliberately said in a troubled tone, ‘But…’

‘Do you have any other doubts, Second Master?’

‘Oh, not about you. It’s more of a problem I have…’ Song Lin used the tea lid to flick some of the floating tea leaves away, saying slowly, ‘There’s something you don’t know. This jade rabbit of mine, he’s… recently… been in great demand. Yesterday, Colonel Chen Yang offered to buy him for a very handsome sum and I’ve already accepted a down payment from him. If I were to turn around and strike a deal with you, that wouldn’t be very honest of me and I would also find it difficult to account for it to the Colonel.’

‘Chen Yang?’

‘Yep, Chen Yang,’ Song Lin stated very calmly.

Bai Yini removed her hand from Song Lin’s shoulder and began sashaying back to her seat, her fingers brushing across the water stains on the table as she said thoughtfully, ‘If it’s Chen Yang… Second Master need not worry about him, he and the Bai clan are actually…’

Before she had finished her sentence, the maid Ping’er, who had been boiling water in one corner, let out a little scream. Bai Yini looked over doubtfully and saw that she had knocked the flask over, scalding her hand.

‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry…’ Ping’er hurriedly began cleaning up.

Bai Yini’s glance swept over her and she suddenly turned round to face Song Lin. ‘Second Master… you said all that just to trick³ me?’

Song Lin shrugged. ‘Would I dare trick you, Miss Bai?’

‘Chen Yang paying in advance and not being able to account for it to him is all nonsense. So you still doubt my sincerity even now?’

‘I was speaking the truth. There are others besides you who have been eyeing my spirit beast. And I don’t doubt your sincerity in the slightest.’

He put down his tea cup and stood up. Styx came over with his coat which he put on and looked ready to leave. ‘It’s just that I left the last person who tried to steal my spirit beast… half-dead.’

The abrupt ruthlessness in the last part of that sentence left Bai Yini feeling apprehensive.

With a slight frown she asked, ‘Song Lin, does this mean that you don’t want to co-operate any more?’

‘Oh, no more calling me “Young Master” now?’

Feeling like she had been made a fool of, Bai Yini got slightly angry and pointed out, ‘If you don’t agree to this deal today, you’ll lose the most peaceful way of settling this contest. Is a mere rabbit worth it? The House of Song is no longer a match for the House of Bai: I only offered to negotiate with you today on account of our having been friends once, don’t you understand?’

Song Lin had already walked to the doorway but he turned round at these words. ‘You listen: I want the title of Arch-Guardian and I also want the rabbit; I will not give up either of them. Now that I’ve put it in such terms, do you finally get it?’

After saying that, he turned round and walked out with Styx without another glance backwards.

Bai Yini watched him depart and said through slightly gritted teeth, ‘Song Lin, you’ll be sorry.’

  1. I KNEW SHE WAS NO GOOD! 8< Stop trying to steal Dandan away! See Song Lin, this is why Dandan didn’t want to admit anything, you start getting a bunch of jerks coming out of the woodwork trying to steal the fluffy bunny away. It’s weird how Bai Yini knew exactly what happened to Dandan though, up to someone stealing away his power… Super suspicious indeed.

    GAH TROY. BE A GOOD DOG. A GOOD DOG. WHAT ARE YOU CAUGHT UP IN. ;O;!!! I mean, I appreciate that he pulled Dandan away, but at the same time Troy was the one to convince Dandan to be there in the first place. So it’s not really saving Dandan… ;;

I’m not quite sure what Ping’er had to do with Bai Yini coming to the realization that Song Lin wasn’t going to give Dandan up. Unless I missed/forgot something, which is very possible. I am glad that Song Lin is standing his ground though! THAT’S RIGHT SONG LIN. WIN THE PRIZE AND THE GIR– RABBIT!!!

    Thanks for the translation!

No, no, you didn’t miss or forget anything; Ping’er is a new character. It’s just a hint that will make sense later.

Troy is struggling with his conscience 😟

There’s a meaningful conversation and more of the past being pieced together coming up so you’ll be getting some answers soon!

Yeah, I like how Song Lin sounded there too. 😁
