Ch. 63 | Dousing the fires

At this time, the Mirror of Imperial Favour was showing Fuyin Street where fiery dragons were snaking round the soldiers, sending them spinning up towards the sky before viciously smashing them to the ground, reducing them to bloody heaps.

Liang Luoheng stood up declaring, ‘We have to go and help them, otherwise the soldiers on Fuyin Street will be decimated.’ He glanced at Ye Ziran’s empty seat and added angrily, ‘It’s outrageous that the feckless son of the Ye clan still isn’t here!’

Song Fuyan observed from under lidded eyes, ‘Now that the Shuren have congregated in Fuyin Street, the soldiers that the League sent over are severely outnumbered…’

‘Won’t deploying all the soldiers that we have here solve that problem?’

‘Then there won’t be anyone to protect the elderly and the children.’

‘I’ll do it!’ Bai Yini declared firmly.

‘That won’t do. If the Shuren attack this place, you won’t be able to fend them off by yourself,’ said Song Fuyan. ‘Besides, you have to look after your mother.’

As soon as Bai Yini heard her mother mentioned, she wavered again.

‘Oi! You can’t send all the troops away from here!’ A middle-aged man whose left hand was injured suddenly shouted a protest from among the crowd of people. ‘Isn’t your purpose for existence to protect our lives? Otherwise, why be the head of the League? Always living in your ivory tower.’

‘Exactly!’ Beside him, a man with a burn injury on his forehead shouted as well. ‘So what if the soldiers on Fuyin Street are dead? They were supposed to sacrifice themselves anyway. You should be protecting us since it wasn’t easy for people like us to escape!’

Dandan felt rather uncomfortable after hearing what they said. He stole a glance at Song Fuyan — so actually, being the head of the League meant having to make difficult choices¹ which was not something everyone could handle well.

Song Fuyan told them in frosty tones, ‘Our soldiers may be willing to die for you, but that does not mean they are supposed to die in the first place. We’re in the grip of a disaster now, so kindly refrain from creating unnecessary trouble.’

At this juncture, Feng Chulian intervened and said, ‘Don’t worry, you can go and take all the soldiers with you as well.’

Everyone looked over at him doubtfully.

‘Naturally, I have my own ways of ensuring everybody’s safety on Crescent Moon Ridge.’

‘Oh? How will you do so, Your Excellency?’ asked Song Fuyan.

‘Please come with me.’ Feng Chulian led everyone to the door of the Chamber of Daoist Treasures. His two disciples standing guard at the entrance opened the big door when they saw their teacher approaching.

Feng Chulian retrieved a blue book from inside. A fish was swimming around on the cover of the book. Liang Luoheng recognised it: The Book of All Things. The fish of this book had a protective shield which could defend against all manner of physical harm. He had always wanted to get his hands on this book but had never known where to start looking for it. Who would have thought that it would be here of all places? The High Priest’s Chamber of Daoist Treasures really lived up to its name: everything could be found here.

As expected, that fish opened its eyes and glanced at Feng Chulian, saying, ‘Finally recalled my existence, have you?’

‘Too boring in there?’ Feng Chulian tickled it slightly with a finger. ‘Do you have any shield to defend against the Reviving Soul Fire?’

‘Reviving Soul Fire, eh…’ The fish swam one round around the book’s edges. ‘How big a shield do you need?’

‘One that’s big enough to cover the whole of Crescent Moon Ridge.’

‘Are you trying to drain the hell out of me!’

‘Do help me out.’

‘Oh, all right.’ The fish puckered its lips and blew a transparent bubble which floated high up and then exploded instantly. Everyone shielded themselves with their hands, expecting to get drenched but they didn’t. Instead, the bubble became an enormous transparent sticky film which lay over the whole of Crescent Moon Ridge.

The two men who had been creating a fuss earlier suddenly exchanged glances and sinister grins.

‘Since this place is already made safe, then let’s hurry up and set off,’ Song Fuyan told Song Lin.

Song Lin nodded, then turned and addressed the crowd. ‘Those Guardians with spirit beasts of Silver calibre and higher are to follow us into battle. Old folks, women and children will stay here.’

Bai Yini wanted to say something but then she looked at her mother and finally said nothing at all.

Just then, Madam Bai took her hand and said, ‘Go if you want to.’

‘Mother?’

‘Don’t worry, I’m very safe here.’

Bai Yini finally nodded and said, ‘Let’s go, Bijou!’

In the end, it was a vast army which went marching down the mountain.

When they reached Fuyin Street, smoke from the wave of heat made it impossible to advance and the rubble looked like a disaster area in the sea of fire. It was hard to believe that this had once been the most prosperous street.

Shuren in dark grey cloaks were roaming the streets like spectres, the ghastly tongues of fire following beside them like docile cats licking their hands.

The League’s soldiers were in armour. These suits of armour had been supplied by the House of Ye many years ago when the Song and Ye clans were still on relatively cordial terms. Although the armour could not withstand the Reviving Soul Fire for long, it could resist it for a while and the soldiers were making use of that time to save as many people from the fires as they could.

‘Aahh!’ A soldier had run out of bullets and just as he was trying to escape, was caught by the Shuren who bit down on the lower half of his body, and stripped the armour off him with their hands. The soldier’s face twisted with pain, his eyes bulging as he stretched out a convulsing hand towards his companions, calling out, ‘Not enough weapons! Run now! Run!!’ He had just said that when the Shuren swallowed him whole.

‘Reporrrt!! The fire is too big, we can’t even get inside!!’ A soldier who had managed to flee ran up to report to Song Fuyan in trembling tones.

‘Dammit!’ Liang Luoheng cursed in a low voice. He made a pulling motion from the ground, causing a branch to appear from the soil which rapidly became a colossal tree. His shoulders made a forward movement and the branches of this tree went shooting forward like sharp blades, directly piercing the Shuren. The pierced Shuren dissolved into a wave of black water and flowed slowly away.

‘This is…’ Dandan had never seen such an ability before and was astounded. ‘Guardians can manipulate plants?’

Song Fuyan heard him and explained, ‘Old Master Liang is different from us. The spiritual power that he has cultivated does not come from a source within himself; it draws on the natural world instead which is why he has never needed, and does not have, a bonded spirit beast.’

The tree branches kept spreading through Fuyin Street and puncturing the Shuren like balloons. Although the black liquid that they dissolved into could once again coagulate into human-like forms, it took them a certain amount of time to do so and the soldiers seized this opportunity to carry the wounded out.

Another soldier came rushing up to report to Song Fuyan. ‘Sir! We’re running out of weapons! We don’t have any more ammunition!’

Song Fuyan frowned deeply and turned to the Guardians behind him. ‘Who’s willing to offer their weapons?’

‘…’ All these Guardians were silent for they had all gone through untold hardships to obtain their magic weapons.

‘Use mine,’ said Song Lin. He summoned the Xuanli arrows and using both hands, clamped them with the Xuanli bow in front of him then opened wide his hands. The Xuanli bow instantly split into hundreds of bows, fanning out like a deck of cards and the soldiers took one each before dashing back into the flames.

The Guardians behind Song Lin all stared at each other in blank dismay, at a loss for words.

Suddenly, a voice bellowed from behind them, ‘Get out of the way!!’

Everyone turned round only to be greeted by the astonishing sight of Ye Ziran sitting atop the barrel of a colossal cannon with his legs carelessly propped up, a fleet of armoured cars behind him stacked high with weapons and all driving towards them.

Ye Ziran jumped down from the cannon and told Song Fuyan, ‘This is the Ye clan’s entire arsenal which you can use!’

Song Fuyan looked faintly astonished for a moment before saying gravely, ’Thank you.’

More soldiers in armour thus took these weapons before running back into the fire again.

‘… A-all right, use my weapon as well!’ After an unknown person in the crowd said this, everyone else began to follow suit one after the other.

‘Take mine too.’

‘Mine isn’t very powerful but you can borrow it all the same.’

‘Mine too!’

As a result, more and more people were willing to lend their magic weapons for use. More soldiers thus went running into the raging fire. They kept hearing popping, hissing sounds as the Shuren were stabbed or shot and very quickly, black liquid was flowing throughout the entire street, but these creatures were able to reconstitute themselves despite being punctured which meant they just kept coming in a never-ending vicious cycle.

‘If only I could go in,’ Dandan said, his fists clenched.

Song Lin glanced at him. ‘You don’t have a magic weapon now so don’t do anything rash.’

‘My fur is thick so I might be able to hold out for a while.’

‘Report! There are only a mother and daughter left trapped in the Pleasure dance hall. Those still alive have all been rescued! But the Pleasure has four floors and the staircase has burnt down, so we can’t get up!’

After hearing this report, Dandan could not sit by any further and transformed into his beast self, instantly shooting up to nine feet, his ears sharpening into forked lightning shapes, his blood-red eyes gleaming. An unusually high amount of spiritual power had accompanied his transformation and feeling an overwhelming pressure behind him, Liang Luoheng turned round to look and asked astounded, ‘Isn’t this that jade rabbit of Yu Huan’s?’

He had seen him once a long time ago.

With one leap, Dandan landed on top of the colossal tree which Liang Luoheng had summoned and, applying the barest pressure to the crown, used the tree’s rebound power to propel him into Fuyin Street. His fur was very special for it could withstand the fire for a time thus his body would not be affected, but there was a limit to its resistance, so he had to work fast²! He raced towards the Pleasure, snapping up any Shuren that tried to block his way and punctured their bodies with his fangs. He then tossed them aside, hurling them against the pillars lining both sides of the road.

He soon reached the Pleasure where he spotted the mother and daughter clinging fearfully to each other on the balcony of the fourth floor. Lifting them out carefully with his front paws, he handed them to the waiting soldiers down below who immediately ran out of Fuyin Street with them.

Dandan was just about to leave himself when a huge blaze like a giant hand suddenly erupted from behind the Pleasure and slapped him down to the ground. He struggled to get to his feet but it was impossible for a hail of fireballs kept pelting him with loud bangs until he was fairly dizzy. Then, like a tornado, the flames curled round him and swept him high up into the air, like an unbridled fiery dragon.

‘Dandan!’ Song Lin hurriedly summoned the Ruyun Blade, spitting out innumerable wind blades which hurtled towards the fire but before they could get near the blaze that Dandan was trapped in, they gave out and disappeared.

‘Dammit.’ Song Lin raised his sword, preparing to rush into the fire but Song Fuyan held him back.

‘Are you crazy! Going in means certain death!’

‘I’m sorry, Brother, but Dandan is someone I must save even if it means death.’

Song Fuyan was taken aback. He never expected his younger brother to say such a thing.

Just then, they heard a dragon roaring above them. Everyone looked up only to see a purple flood dragon swooping down from the sky and attacking the fire dragon which was holding Dandan. The flood dragon seized the fire dragon by the neck and with a mighty toss, flung it like a rope against the wall of the Pleasure.

The wall cracked loudly under the impact…

Dandan: ‘Crap, crap, not so hard! I’m still inside!!’

The fire dragon was finally unable to trap Dandan and loosened its grip on him.

A spent³ Dandan had already transformed back into his human self and went falling through the air, but the flood dragon caught him in its mouth and flew upwards until it reached the beginning of Fuyin Street where it wheeled round in an arc. In an instant, dark clouds filled the sky and a moment later, torrential rain came pouring down loudly. The blaze which had engulfed Fuyin Street for much of the day finally began to die out …

In the midst of this downpour, the flood dragon transformed into its human self and landed leisurely among the crowd with Dandan in his arms.

Song Lin received Dandan from him and said, ‘Thanks, Boss of Pink Romance.’

Phantom winked at him. ‘Don’t mention it.’

  1. Wow, met some assholes here. Expecting people to sacrifice themselves for your sorry asses is a stretch imo. YOU GO SONG FUYAN.

The Book of All Things… one, that fish is awesome. Two, that is a VERY convenient book, haha. Sassy book as well. I approve!

Omg, suspicious people are suspicious. Are they going to try to steal the book or something because I wouldn’t put it past them. Or do something internally since that soul fire is being shielded against…

I just. The fact they were described as jellies kind of makes me laugh a bit. You got eaten by a jelly monster. That is not the most noble of deaths. :’) Also, good on Song Lin offering his magic bow, but it just splits into a ton of bows…? That is also a very convenient weapon right there LOL

AAA DANDAN!!! Being badass and then getting slapped down the next second sounds exactly like him. Song Lin essentially going straight up HE’S MY HEART to Song Fuyan is amazing!!! THAT’S RIGHT SONG LIN, HELP YOUR RABBIT/BOYFRIEND!!

    AAA HI PHANTOM!!!!!

    Thanks for the chapter!!

    1. Hehe, so funny the way you put it! Yeah, I liked how he shut them down.

Right?! I loved how it made the most of its three seconds of screentime 😂 Made me wish there was a story about all these wisecracking books and their interactions with Feng Chulian and Bi An.

😆 Guess they need all the advantages they can get against the Shuren.

I’m reminded of Bi An’s ‘rabbit fail’ 🤭🤣

Song Lin giving his big bro shock after shock 😂

      😘💕
