Will release Chapter 19 as well this week as Chapter 18 is very short.

Ch. 18 | In pursuit

The next day, Song Lin’s expression was most interesting upon discovering that the bunny he had been rearing had run away. He gazed at the empty bed next to his and commented, ‘Good, well done, he’s flown the coop.’

Servant girl A: Is it me or is Young Master giving off murderous vibes?

Servant girl B: But Young Master doesn’t really care very much for the rabbit, no? He refused to make a pact with the rabbit even though the latter got through the beast colosseum challenge. Doesn’t that clearly mean Young Master doesn’t like him?

Servant girl C: Not to mention, he has a new favourite. He’s been taking really good care of the little white dog in the eastern side rooms.

Servant girl D: Could it be that the one Young Master really likes is the little white rabbit after all?

Song Lin swung round so suddenly that the four servant girls began shivering. Oh no, were we thinking too loudly and Young Master heard us?

Just then, Styx came hurrying in. ‘Second Master, please come with me to the kitchen!’

The corners of Song Lin’s mouth twisted upon seeing the disorderly pile of roasted lamb leg bones. ‘How very capable of him, even eating his money’s worth before leaving.’

‘Who would have thought Dandan would be able to give the guards at our manor the slip and escape without anyone knowing¹?’ Styx found it inconceivable.

Song Lin observed, ‘He’s always had the ability to escape from the Song Manor.’

‘Huh?’ Styx was baffled. ‘Then why didn’t he do so earlier and even accepted the challenge of the beast colosseum?’

‘That answer will have to wait until we catch and interrogate him.’ Song Lin rolled his neck with a most sinister cracking sound.

With unwonted boldness, Styx asked suddenly, ‘Second Master, are you… actually very angry?’

‘Do I look angry?’ The corners of Song Lin’s mouth pulled into a most insincere smile.

Styx and the four servant girls nodded and screamed mentally: Yes! Fit to blow your top!

‘Well?’ Seeing that they were not answering, Song Lin’s face darkened.

This time, all five shook their heads so vigorously they resembled those toy rattle-drums. ‘No, no, no, not at all!!’

Satisfied, Song Lin stopped smiling in that spine-chillingly insincere way and all five immediately heaved a sigh of relief.

‘Is there a fast way to find out where he is?’

‘Yes, Young Master, there’s a readily available way,’ answered Styx. ‘You put your Blood Weapon inside him the last time so he now bears traces of your spiritual power within. We can use the Soul Tracking Technique to find him by tracing your spiritual power.’

Styx produced a map of Ridge City and spread it out on the table. From Song Lin’s fingertips, he drew out a wisp of spiritual power. The pinpoint of blue light began spinning above a spot on the map: it was the Song Manor.

Styx said, ‘This was where Dandan set off from last night.’

‘Mm,’ Song Lin nodded, ‘continue.’

Styx recited an incantation and the spinning spiritual energy stilled abruptly. It quivered for a moment then leapt south on the map like an arrow.

‘That’s the path Dandan took last night,’ Styx narrowed his eyes as he stared at the map, analysing calmly, ‘He headed south. Perhaps he intended to go to one of the Five Great Houses, the Liangs…’ At this point, the arrow stopped, made a sudden turn and headed west.

Styx gaped then cleared his throat and said, ‘If it’s this direction, he may have been heading west towards a gorge which is the Wanyans’ territory…’ Before he could finish his sentence, the arrow gave another agitated spin and then leapt east.

A vein was already throbbing on Styx’s temple but he endeavoured to continue calmly, ‘To the east lies the Forging Swords Mountain Villa, territory of the Rong clan…’

The arrow spun round a few times in the east before turning round and coming back. ‘This, this is our Song kitchen… what evil was he planning…’

Song Lin massaged the space between his brows and said, ‘Probably felt hungry on the way there and came back to eat roasted lamb legs.’

They both stared with furrowed foreheads as the blue light leapt erratically around for half an hour before coming to a stop in the southernmost corner.

Styx: ‘… He could have just gone straight… why did he go round in circles for so long?’

Song Lin: ‘… Probably… got lost.’

And then they both said to themselves: Poor thing has zero sense of direction.

  1. Those servant girls all make good points, it really looks that way from the outside. I started laughing so hard. Zero sense of direction is an understatement. I’m amazed Dandan found his way back to the kitchen at all. Thanks for the translation!
