Ch. 42 | Rescue

Just then…

‘Dandan?’ A voice called out suddenly.

Chen Yang immediately stuffed Dandan into the sack, closing off the mouth before turning round to see who it was. Bi An, wearing an old-fashioned purplish blue changshan and carrying an oil-paper umbrella, was standing there looking very puzzled.

Chen Yang stood up, straightened his uniform and with a slight smile befitting the occasion, asked Bi An, ‘Is something the matter?’

Bi An pointed at the sack and said, ‘I thought I saw my friend…’

‘You’re mistaken. That was a fox fur muff I bought for my wife.’

‘I-it was?’ Bi An hesitated, scratched his head and said, ‘I see. I guess I was mistaken.’

Chen Yang thus turned away and got into the car which drove off a few seconds later.

Bi An stood gazing after the car for a long moment before suddenly breaking into a run for the Song Manor.

Dandan, trapped inside the sack in complete darkness, was unable to see anything and he couldn’t help bellowing angrily, ‘Let me out!’

‘Shut up!’ Chen Yang slapped him right in the face then massaged his wrist and told the driver, ‘Hurry up.’

Stunned by the force of this blow, it was some time before Dandan recovered. Goddamnit, wait until I get out of here, I’ll kill you for sure!!

Seeing that there was no more movement from the sack, Chen Yang laughed coldly. ‘I can imagine your expression right now but don’t worry. Even if you die, Song Lin will not come and save you because he no longer wants you.’

At the same time, Song Lin had decided to go to bed. He had just removed his coat and was unbuttoning his shirt when he heard Styx walking in and saying, ‘Second Master, the High Priest’s disciple is looking for you.’

‘He’s here to look for Dandan, more likely. Tell him that Dandan isn’t here and not to come again.’

‘But…’ Styx reported with a frown, ‘he says he saw Dandan just now.’

Song Lin paused fractionally, then continued to unbutton his shirt. ‘What’s that got to do with me?’

‘I’m sorry, Second Master, the truth is… I’ve already allowed him to come in without your permission,’ Styx bowed and said respectfully.

Barely had he finished speaking when Bi An rushed in, saying breathlessly, ‘Second Master Song! Dandan’s been kidnapped by a strange man!!!’

A startled Song Lin looked at Styx and then at Bi An in turn before remarking, ‘Are you both putting on an act? What would Dandan be doing near the Song Manor?’

Bi An was beside himself with worry. ‘What are you talking about, Second Master Song? If you still don’t hurry up and save Dandan, he’s going to be skinned alive, have his bones picked clean and then made into stew!’

Song Lin regarded him doubtfully.

‘I waited for Teacher to fall asleep before sneaking out because I was thinking of visiting Dandan. Near your manor, I saw a fellow who was wearing the League’s uniform stuffing Dandan into a sack.’

Upon hearing the words ‘wearing the League’s uniform’, Song Lin’s expression changed slightly and he immediately buttoned up his shirt and picked up his coat. ‘Styx, come with me.’

Styx instantly fell in after him as did a terribly anxious¹ Bi An. After retrieving the car they set off in pursuit, following Bi An’s directions until they arrived at the seaside but not once did they spot Chen Yang’s car. Styx tried using the Soul Tracking Technique, yet there was no trace of Dandan’s spiritual power at all.

‘Looks like they came prepared, even using a spell to mask Dandan’s spiritual power and making it impossible to track him… they’ve been planning this operation for a long time,’ observed Song Lin.

Bi An broke in anxiously, ‘This won’t do, I’ll go back and ask Teacher. He’s bound to have a way to find Dandan.’

‘We’re on the outskirts of Ridge City and it’s too late to go back to Crescent Moon Ridge now.’

Song Lin left the car behind altogether and began walking towards the beach. Styx hurried over with an umbrella, trying to shelter him from the rain but Song Lin waved it away and said, ‘No need.’

His expensive Western suit was getting soaked by the rain as he gazed out to sea, musing, ‘If they were driving, this is the only road they could have taken, unless they also abandoned the car and decided to go by the mountains.’

Bi An said, ‘That isn’t likely because they don’t know that we’ve been following them, so there’s no reason to take a shortcut.’

At this point, Song Lin recalled how he had used a magic sending circle in the Fascinating Forest to convey Dandan to his side. After a moment’s recollection, he immediately drew said circle in the sand and filled it with his spiritual energy. The magic sending circle merely lit up for a while but did not send Dandan back even after a long time.

‘What’s going on?’ Song Lin looked darkly out to sea, pondering, ‘The sending spell can’t convey him which must mean something is blocking it… Could it be… the sea?’

Styx had clearly come to the same conclusion for he said, ‘Second Master, they might be… inside the sea.’

Bi An offered, ‘I can get them out.’

Both of them looked at him. ‘How?’

‘There’s a course we shamans have to take which teaches us how to communicate with everything in creation.’ While explaining, Bi An placed a circular mark on his forehead.

‘How do you communicate?’

‘Teacher once taught me that when the heart is free of distracting thoughts, the six senses are purified after which we’ll be able to communicate our thoughts to everything in the natural world. Although I don’t really like studying, I still managed to master this subject quite well.’

Song Lin and Styx exchanged glances and then waited for his next move.

All they saw was Bi An closing his eyes, holding his breath and the mark on his forehead glowing red. In a short while, the sea started to form a whirlpool with countless fish leaping out of the water. The whirlpool gradually became bigger before a path actually formed in the centre.

Styx asked, ‘This will work?’

Bi An replied, ‘Of course. Water is the most pliable element in nature and is very easy to manipulate.’

They all looked at the sea which had formed two smooth walls, between which stood a person.

‘You managed to find us even though we’re in here. You’re quite something, Second Master Song.’ Chen Yang’s voice came drifting over. His black boots gleamed, a whip hung from his waist and the peak of his hat was pulled low, shadowing his face.

Seeing the way he was dangling Dandan by his ears instantly magnified Song Lin’s animosity — to be frank, seeing his own spirit beast being treated like that only made him want to tear off that man’s arm.

Styx said to Chen Yang, ‘Chen Yang, you’re a colonel in the League but have stooped so low as to steal a Guardian’s bonded spirit beast. This is a serious crime. Aren’t you afraid of being court-martialled?’

Chen Yang seemed completely unfazed however. ‘Excuse me, but you’ve got it wrong. The League has long had Yu Huan’s spirit beasts on its wanted list. This jade rabbit happens to have been Yu Huan’s bonded spirit beast so I’m merely following orders to apprehend him. What crime is there in that?’

Styx said, ‘This is our Second Master’s spirit beast. How can he be Yu Huan’s spirit beast?’

‘Stop playing dumb. Second Master Song knows better than anyone whether this is the Supreme Jade Rabbit of Dragon Ridge!’

Song Lin, eyelids lowered, pondered: Brother promised to suppress this matter for the time being so he would never have let this news leak out. So then… how did this one find out about it?

‘You don’t have to rack your brains over how I found out about it,’ Chen Yang said with the air of one who had thought everything out well². ‘Whatever the case, I’m just following orders to arrest this jade rabbit and no one can stop me.’

‘Since when did following orders to arrest someone require such underhand³ means? Sneaking around in the middle of the night, even using a tranquilliser! Besides, where’s your arrest warrant? Show us an arrest warrant if you can!’ Bi An challenged him.

A muscle near Chen Yang’s mouth twitched, his expression grew forbidding and he lambasted Bi An: ‘Who the hell are you that I must show you an arrest warrant?’

Styx rejoined, ‘Meaning you don’t have one. Chen Yang, stealing another person’s spirit beast in the League’s name is beyond despicable!’

‘Bah, would a spirit beast who had an owner be wandering the streets in the middle of the night? Would a spirit beast who had an owner be so easily caught by me? What use is such an owner? You all just didn’t see what a pitiful sight it was: the little rabbit all alone, wandering around with no home to return to. I offered him shelter out of kindness which is why he followed me voluntarily.’

Voluntarily? Song Lin’s heart sank when he heard this word.

Chen Yang laughed mockingly and transferred his gaze to Song Lin. ‘Second Master Song, you were the one who didn’t want this spirit beast. You still hope to take back the very thing you chased out? Dream on!’

At that point, Song Lin, who had been silent up till then, finally spoke. ‘Chen Yang, I’ll give you ten seconds to return him to me.’

When Styx heard this tone of voice, he gave a slight start at first, then looked rather strangely at Song Lin. He had been so busy arguing with Chen Yang that he had not noticed Song Lin’s mood. In all the time that he had known him, Styx had never seen Song Lin appear this angry about anything. If anger at its maximum was a hundred, then Song Lin right now was a hundred and twenty. Styx checked the expression in Song Lin’s eyes again — yep, those shadows brewing in his eyes portended a furious tempest.

He thus tapped Bi An on the shoulder. ‘Let’s go over there, there’s nothing else for us to do here.’

‘Huh? Why?’ Bi An rubbed a palm over his fist. ‘I was just warming up for a go at him.’

‘We don’t have to do it…’ Styx pointed at Song Lin. ‘He’s about to get serious. Our Second Master rarely does anything in earnest.’

‘… Oh, really…’ Bi An was then dragged to one side by Styx.

The clueless Chen Yang even dangled Dandan, taunting Song Lin. ‘Come and get him, if you can.’ His voice had barely faded when he was knocked down by a gust of wind.

‘What was that?!!’ Chen Yang’s face was smarting painfully as though he had just been slapped, slapped silly as a matter of fact.

Dandan, who was sent flying out of Chen Yang’s hand, went tumbling a few rounds on the seafloor, getting mud all over his fur. He couldn’t move at all but he really would have liked to turn the air blue.

Are you kidding me?! Why am I getting hammered when it’s the two of you fighting?

Song Lin, standing erect with his hands clasped behind his back, held a golden long sword which he had produced at some point.

‘I most certainly can.’

Chen Yang swiftly unhooked his leather whip and cracked it towards Song Lin who made a slashing motion with his golden long sword, sending a line of wind blades flying out. These not only severed the whip, they also sliced Chen Yang’s hat and left bloody cuts all over his body.

An intense spiritual aura surrounded Song Lin, the pressure from it so overwhelming that even Styx and Bi An couldn’t bear it and had to retreat farther away.

Chen Yang was shaken by such a fearsome display of fury. The wind blades were still spiralling before his eyes, as though they could kill him any time. He finally understood exactly how powerful Song Lin was and that he had no hope of retaliating, so he had to think of a way to escape!

The wind blades whirred and began moving towards him in an attack. From the corner of his eye he saw Dandan and instantly snatched him up, holding him up before him like a shield.

Dandan: ???

Song Lin pulled back abruptly and the wind blades came to a dead stop inches from Dandan’s face, causing him to break out in a cold sweat.

He ranted internally: Are you kidding me? You’re fighting over me, aren’t you? Can’t you treat me a little better and with a bit more of the respect I deserve?!!!

Seething with resentment, he opened wide his mouth and bit down on the flesh between Chen Yang’s thumb and forefinger, making sure to bite hard. Chen Yang, who was clearly not anticipating such a move, gave a grunt of pain and flung Dandan to one side.

‘Not again?!’ Dandan was most miserable and also, most despairing.

Song Lin’s feet moved and he flew across in a flash, grabbed hold of Chen Yang’s collar and punched him clear into the ground with a cracking blow. Chen Yang felt as though something had just reverberated through his head, leaving his ears ringing; the next instant he coughed up a mouthful of blood and two front teeth.

Styx and Bi An covered their eyes with their hands: Tsk tsk, such a brutal scene, we dare not look.

  1. I can’t help but laugh at the thought of Dandan being shoved into a sack. And I know I’ve said this more than once before, but it needs to be said again. I suuuuper love the side characters in this novel. Bi An, you’re amazing and a GOOD FRIEND. Though the fact that Chen Yang basically went “why yes, this is a good excuse” is also endlessly funny to me. At least try a bit harder. I can’t believe he thought that was a good excuse and wasn’t flimsy as paper.

Not that I like Chen Yang. Chen Yang go DIE IN A DITCH. DONT YOU DARE HIT MY DANDAN!!! DONT HURT HIS FEELINGS!!!

Have I mentioned what a good friend Bi An is. ;; Also, “You managed to find us even though we’re in here.” Chen Yang… you’re not… very stealthy… It took them like two seconds to figure it out… You’re embarrassing stop it…

I still want to kick him in the face. I shall settle for Song Lin kicking him in the face (ngl, so satisfied reading the last few sentences). Bi An warming up was super cute!

…I think this comment was even more disjointed than usual. SORRY. :D;;; Thanks for translating! Always appreciated greatly! <33

    1. No worries! I think it can’t be helped when you’re reading just one chapter a week and not all of them are stuffed with events you can react to. Ramble away by all means! (◠‿◕)

Chen Yang has obviously no clue he’s playing with fire heh. Song Lin really didn’t waste much time socking it to him. And he’s not quite done yet, ouchie…
