Ch. 43 | Fence-mending

Song Lin drew out a spare syringe of tranquilliser from Chen Yang’s pocket and asked with suppressed fury, ‘This was the stuff you injected into Dandan?’

Chen Yang’s face was covered in blood and he was in such disarray he couldn’t speak at all.

‘Why were you after Dandan; who sent you?’ Song Lin broke off the needle and threatened, ‘If you don’t come clean, I’ll empty this entire syringe of tranquilliser into your mouth.’

‘…’ Chen Yang, feeling Song Lin’s murderous intent and seeing the ruthlessness in those pale blue eyes, could not help feeling unnerved: Deuce, don’t tell me I’m really going to die here?

‘Talk!’ Song Lin grabbed hold of Chen Yang’s jaw, forced his mouth open and then held the syringe full of tranquilliser ready next to it.

Chen Yang shouted as he struggled, ‘Crone! Save me!!’

Song Lin asked with a frown, ‘Who’s Crone?’

‘Save me, Crone!!!’ Chen Yang just kept hollering this name, heedless of everything else.

Song Lin grabbed hold of his hair, forced his head backwards and then emptied the entire syringe of contents down his throat.

Chen Yang coughed and spluttered, ‘You said you would let me off as long as I came clean!!’

Song Lin patted his face grimly. ‘I only said I would empty the syringe into your mouth if you didn’t come clean, but I never said anything about letting you off after you had done so. You stole my spirit beast but still hope to get off scot-free¹ — isn’t that rather wishful thinking?’

Chen Yang was gnashing his teeth so violently he shook from head to toe — if he had a sword now he would surely hack this fellow before him to pieces!

But the narcotic was already taking effect and Chen Yang’s mind went utterly blank. He was incapable of speech and could only gasp for breath, his eyes open to their widest.

Song Lin first walked over to Dandan, picking him up carefully and embracing him. Nestling in the crook of his arm, Dandan felt a sense of security. After that, Song Lin picked Chen Yang up by the scruff of his neck and dragged him all the way back before flinging him down onto the sand.

Seeing that the carnage was already over, Bi An returned the sea to its original state. The sea’s surface was so quiet it was as if nothing had happened.

Song Lin’s leather shoe rested on Chen Yang’s face as he looked down his nose at him and said, ‘I could kill you but as seeing you’re a colonel from the League, I don’t want to make trouble for my brother.’ Finally he stamped on his face a few times then warned, ‘Let this be the last time.’

Chen Yang had never been so humiliated in his life and could only lie there, gnashing his teeth as he gazed up at the sky.

It was only long after Song Lin and everyone else had left that there finally came the sound of leisurely footsteps on the beach. An old woman with a stooped back leaned on a walking stick as she walked nearer.

Chen Yang called out hastily, ‘Crone, help me! I can’t move!’

The old woman was wearing a dirty, tattered scarf and the few wisps of white hair she had were ruffled by the sea breeze. She stretched out a hand which was as fair and tender as that of a twenty-year-old girl’s, the fingers long and slender as they gently smoothed his hair. ‘Poor young man, let me help you.’

Chen Yang’s eyes widened suddenly. ‘No… no! Crone! You can’t do this! We had an agreement! We still have an agreement! The House of Bai still needs my influence in the League, you can’t kill me!’

On this night, the sea breeze was incomparably cold and the beach was as quiet and peaceful as if nothing had happened.

Bi An accompanied Song Lin and the rest back to the entrance of the Song Manor and asked rather worriedly, ‘Do you think Chen Yang will take his revenge when he gets back to the League and reveal that Dandan was Yu Huan’s spirit beast?’

Styx shook his head. ‘No, he had no arrest warrant and stole a spirit beast. This is itself a serious crime so he will never make it known.’

Song Lin added, ‘The reason he was sneaking around at night was precisely to avoid being conspicuous so he won’t be so stupid as to disclose the whole matter.’

Bi An felt more reassured and then happened to catch sight of Feng Chulian’s slender, white-robed figure standing in front of them just then.

‘Teacher!’ Bi An ran over immediately. ‘What are you doing here?’

Feng Chulian’s eyes ran over him for a moment and after ascertaining that Bi An wasn’t hurt anywhere, he gave a flick of his sleeves, turned away and walked off.

‘Teacher! Wait for me.’

Bi An wondered: Don’t tell me he’s angry? His eyes darted round quickly and he hastily told Song Lin in an aside, ‘Look after Dandan well. I’ll come visit him another day.’ He then ran quickly after his teacher.

Feng Chulian shot a sideways glance at the little disciple who was imitating his every move² and asked, ‘What are you following me for?’

‘Of course I must follow you, Teacher.’ Bi An smiled fawningly. ‘My most beloved teacher.’

‘I’m surprised you still think of me as your teacher.’

‘I do, of course I do. From the moment you saved me from that pile of ashes, you were my teacher and will be for my whole life. I’ll also be filial to you all my life.’ Bi An’s voice was positively syrupy as he asked, ‘By the way, how did you know that I was at the Song Manor?’

Feng Chulian answered, ‘I divined it.’

‘Right, right, right. Teacher is the High Priest, the most powerful. You know everything from the positions of the stars to the natural order of things among men and nature, so you can divine anything.’

Feng Chulian turned his head and said, ‘Pipe down.’

Bi An said, ‘Teacher, your health isn’t so good so you really mustn’t come down the mountain willy-nilly. If there’s anything in future, just let me do it for you. You just recuperate peacefully on the mountain, all right?’

Feng Chulian sighed inwardly. Did I end up saving an ancestor to wait upon?

Bi An stretched out a hand, smiling slyly. ‘Are you tired, Teacher? Shall I lead you home by the hand?’

Feng Chulian was taken aback and hastily hid his hands behind his back. ‘Rubbish, whatever next?’

Bi An stuck out his tongue for a moment. ‘Joking, I was just joking. Why are you panicking, Teacher?’

Feng Chulian lifted his haughty chin proudly. ‘I was not panicking.’

‘Quite so, quite so. Teacher is the High Priest so how could you possibly panic?’ Bi An’s eyes were like two smiling crescents.

While teacher and disciple were merrily chatting, Song Lin had brought Dandan back into the manor and the little rabbit’s condition was really not too good. His fur had been drenched by the seawater and he was shivering with cold.

Song Lin sat down on his bed, placed him on his thigh and covered him with his clothes. Then he looked up at Styx and asked, ‘When will the drug wear off?’

Styx examined Dandan for a while before answering, ‘Second Master, it looks like… quite a high dosage so most likely by tomorrow morning. But after it wears off, severe pain follows which is hard for spirit beasts to bear, so a painkiller has to be given promptly.’

‘Do we have any to spare in the medicine storehouse?’

‘Yes, we do, Young Master. I’ll go get some from the storehouse now, so please wait a while.’

Song Lin nodded then lowered his head to look at Dandan and began stroking his fur. Dandan was freezing and he tried to worm his way into Song Lin’s embrace, smearing water, mud and sand onto Song Lin’s shirt in the process. Song Lin was startled and pushed the rabbit away slightly with a disgusted frown but the rabbit unexpectedly tried again and succeeded, almost burying his entire head in the hollow under Song Lin’s arm.

Song Lin: …

Shortly after that, Styx returned with a pill and instructions: ‘He must swallow this pill before he’s fully awake.’

‘Leave it there, I’ll manage.’

On his way out, Styx paused to add, ‘Young Master, be sure not to overexert yourself and to get some rest.’

‘All right, I know what my limits are.’

Despite saying that, Song Lin still sat up the whole night waiting. He was afraid of missing that precise moment when the tranquilliser would begin to wear off, afraid that Dandan would feel even the slightest pain.

Early the next morning, Dandan blearily felt someone pouring water into his mouth and when he opened his eyes to look, saw Song Lin.

‘Song Lin?’ Dandan was astonished and when he found himself lying on Song Lin’s thigh, felt even more astounded.

Song Lin ordered, ‘Swallow the medicine.’

Dandan did as he was told and only then did it occur to him to ask just what medicine it was.

Before he could say anything however, Song Lin asked, ‘Do you feel any pain anywhere?’

Dandan shook his head.

Upon which Song Lin put him back down on the ground, saying, ‘All right, you can leave.’

… Eh? Y-you want me to leave again? Dandan sprawled motionless on the floor, totally unable to accept the way the situation had developed.

Nor did Song Lin bother with him, merely busying himself with removing his shoes before stretching lazily and lying down on the bed to rest. Having sat up the whole night without once closing his eyes, even his waist was aching.

Dandan remained sulking on the floor for some time and then finding that Song Lin was still ignoring him, began to feel rather bored. He thus transformed into his human self and walked to the bed, calling in a small voice, ‘Hey, Song Lin… Song Lin? Answers to the name of Song?’

The person lying on the bed did not answer him.

Dandan gazed at his sleeping face and couldn’t resist staring for a while longer. He had to admit that this sleeping face really was a sight for sore eyes.

But he couldn’t keep staring at him like some pervert so he cleared his throat and said, ‘Hey… you really want to chase me out?’

A profound silence was still his only answer.

‘But…’ Dandan crumpled a corner of his clothes. There was something he really wanted to say but it had been stuck in his throat quite a few times and he just couldn’t get the words out³. He knew why it was imperative to stay by Song Lin’s side but he just didn’t know how to express this reason and it left him utterly confused.

Swallowing hard, he finally ventured, ‘Song Lin, if you chase me out, how will you take part in the finals of the Guardians’ Tournament after this? I mean, we’ve already spent a few months together in any case and already have a certain rapport. Suppose you find a new spirit beast at this time, what if the two of you just can’t work together? What if it doesn’t understand your commands? I think the best idea would be for me to fight alongside you until the Guardians’ Tournament is over. At that point, if you still want me gone, then I’ll leave, what do you say?’

Song Lin opened his eyes then and replied, ‘Haven’t I made myself plain yet? When I told you to get lost, I meant forever. Is my Chinese that bad or your hearing that’s a problem?’

Dandan was stunned. He had thought that since Song Lin had rushed to the seaside late at night to save him, it meant that he was no longer angry, but never did he dream Song Lin would reject him so completely. No, rejection doesn’t even describe it. From the tone of his voice now, he clearly loathes me… Even if I’m thick-skinned enough to beg him, what’s the point? I’ll still be chased out.

Having come to this conclusion, he merely said softly, ‘Okay, I understand. Thank you for saving me last night.’ After taking two steps, he stopped again and asked, ‘By the way, since you don’t want to see me ever again, should we dissolve the pact?’

‘We can do it right now if you wish.’

‘No, there’s no hurry,’ Dandan said hastily. ‘After all, I’m not in a hurry to find a new owner so why don’t we just leave our pact as it is for a while more? You never know, you might just need me again one day?’

‘You presume too much, that will never happen.’

‘…’ Dandan was rather demoralised and also rather hurt but he forced himself to say in a normal tone, ‘Then… best of luck with finding a new and powerful spirit beast… and best of luck… with winning the title of Arch-Guardian.’

‘As you say,’ Song Lin replied coldly.

‘I’ll be going then.’

‘Bye.’

Dandan hesitated where he was for a while but after seeing that Song Lin had no intention of urging him to stay, all his confidence evaporated and he was filled with an overwhelming sense of abandonment as if he had just fallen into an abyss. Crestfallen, he walked out of the room and bumped into Styx in the corridor.

‘Oh, Ol’ Fish Eyes, you’re also up so early?’

Styx darted a glance at him. ‘How are you feeling?’

‘Didn’t expect you to care about me. I’m so touched.’

‘I don’t care about you. I’m just feeling sorry for Second Master who sat up the whole night just to watch over you.’

‘Huh?’ Dandan immediately latched on to the key phrase. ‘The whole night?’

‘Severe pain follows once the tranquilliser wears off, so a painkiller needs to be taken at an exact time. You’re not in any pain, correct? That’s because Young Master watched over you the whole night, waiting for the drug to wear off and then feeding you the painkiller.’

‘You’re saying… that he didn’t sleep the whole night just so he could feed me the painkiller?’

Dandan stood stock-still where he was for some time until Styx began to think something was wrong with him and waved a hand before his eyes, asking, ‘What’s the matter with this fool?’

‘I have something to discuss with Song Lin so don’t interrupt us!’ After saying that, Dandan rushed back into the bedroom.

Styx looked at Dandan’s retreating back as though the latter were a lunatic. After an interval, he went back to his own bedroom to write a secret report to Eldest Master: I’m afraid that Dandan will be returning to the Song Manor.

After putting down his writing brush, he rested his head on one hand and mused, Come to think of it, it’s been some time since I saw Troy. Where has that fellow gone to?

Outside, the rain was still falling so Styx added a note in the last line of the letter: The rainy season is long, do remember to dress more warmly. After a pause, he felt that there was something faintly inappropriate about this line so with a sigh, he dipped the writing brush in ink and blotted out the words.

  1. SONG LIN YOU BE THE MURDEROUS YOU. <333 Now if only your threatening skills could translate into being nice to Dandan skills… I mean I guess you rescued Dandan… But Dandan doesn’t seem to realize how nice you’re being in that cold, offhanded manner you have. ;; DOES IT EVEN COUNT THEN. The answer is yes, but also no because my heart is crying.

NGL, I could probably read a story about Bi An and Feng Chulian. :’) Bi An you’re shameless and I love it.

Ughhhhh, why can’t they stop being so stubborn!!! Song Lin you idiot! Dandan you idiot! TWO IDIOTS IN LOVE. Dandan pushing his head into Song Lin arm nearly killed me, that was such a cute and sweet image. And then of course, the moment Dandan is kind of aware Song Lin is pushing him away again. Dandan tries so hard in his own way to be accepted, and I just collapse onto his side completely. GROW UP SONG LIN. DON’T MAKE ME KICK IN YOUR HEAD.

It’s a good thing Styx was there, or else Dandan would have just left completely and I would have died. Or murdered Song Lin. Toss up.

Hm. Where are you Troy. Also hm, Styx writing secret letters that are half love notes. 8) Don’t be a coward Styx! Just let him see it!

    Thanks for the translation!!
