Ch. 64 | Looting

‘This gentleman is?’ Song Fuyan asked.

‘Hello, hello, I’m Phantom and I have a shop along Fuyin Street.’ Phantom took out a business card and presented it to the latter.

Song Fuyan was slightly startled and hesitated before accepting it, then saw what was written on it: Pink Romance, providing you the ultimate experience in afternoon delight!

Umm… what was this? The corners of Song Fuyan’s mouth turned down.

‘My little shop’s been burnt down, but I still have some stocks left. If you ever need anything, just let me know,’ Phantom said very warmly.

Song Fuyan nodded rather absently and passed the card to Styx who was secretly loath to take the thing but had to since it was Eldest Master handing it to him. After glancing at it with a frown, he stuffed it into his pocket.

The heavy rain gradually lightened to a drizzle and somebody finally observed, ‘The fires on Fuyin Street seem to have been… put out?’

Song Fuyan turned his head to look. It was true, the conflagration of earlier had now been reduced to a few cinders and after being pelted by the rain, died out completely, leaving only black smoke.

Kleidi, who was standing next to Wanyan Fu, was astounded and asked Phantom, ‘You can extinguish this Reviving Soul Fire?’

Phantom took one look at her and commented, ‘Hm, you look like one of those things on Fuyin Street…’

Wanyan Fu pulled Kleidi behind him and stated, ‘She’s my bonded spirit beast.’

‘Oh.’ Phantom scratched his chin but did not ask any more questions. ‘I can only put them out for a while. Once the rain stops, these fires will start burning again.’

Kleidi said, ‘The Reviving Soul Fire is also known as the Eternal Fire and is made up of the aggrieved energies of dead spirit beasts, so ordinary water has no effect on them.’

‘Oh, what a coincidence. The water I’m using is the most pristine melted snow from the peaks of snow-capped mountains which has a purifying effect, so it can extinguish these fires temporarily.’

Just then, Dandan came to and coughed twice violently, then opened his eyes and saw Phantom who waved elegantly by way of greeting and said, ‘Hi baby, you’re awake?’

Dandan stared at him for two seconds then suddenly sprang up and out of Song Lin’s embrace to throttle Phantom. ‘You wretch, you actually picked me up with your mouth!!! Do you know how disgusting your saliva is!!!’

Phantom just smiled and let himself be shaken back and forth. ‘Ah well, it was an emergency so don’t split hairs, yeah?’

Song Lin took hold of Dandan’s shoulders and pulled him away. ‘All right, that’s enough.’

Dandan began rubbing his face on Song Lin’s clothes. ‘I want to get his saliva off me.’

Surprisingly, Song Lin did not seem to mind but said seriously instead, ‘What happened today should not be repeated. If you do anything that dangerous again, I’ll tie your hands and feet up.’

‘… Okay, got it.’ Dandan continued rubbing his face on his clothes.

Song Fuyan looked thoughtfully¹ at them.

Suddenly, the sound of a walking stick tapping on the ground was heard and an old woman with a stooped back slowly emerged from the smoke-filled Fuyin Street. At first, they could only make out a hazy shape but when the smoke cleared away, they saw clearly the huge group of Shuren wearing dark grey capes standing behind the old woman.

Phantom had been staring at the old woman and his expression suddenly changed. His eyes widened, he clenched his fists and bit out, ‘The Crone!’

He was just about to rush at her but Dandan pulled him back, urging, ‘Phantom! Calm down!’

‘It’s her, isn’t it!’ Phantom pointed at her, his finger and voice shaking slightly. ‘The one who killed Yu Huan!’

Dandan sucked in his breath deeply and forced himself to be calm. ‘It’s her!’

Song Lin glanced at Dandan and saw that although he had told Phantom to stay calm, he himself was not. He thus tightened his hold on Dandan, the warmth of his hands giving the latter a sense of security.

Dandan had actually been feeling the same way as Phantom: the sight of the Crone had awakened all his hatred, but fortunately Song Lin was there to prevent him from losing his head. It had also been Song Lin’s timely embrace at the seaside which had stopped him from absorbing any more of the spiritual power the Crone had been forcing on him.

‘Well, well, well, look who this is… long time no see, Phantom,’ the Crone cackled queerly, sounding as grating as a saw splitting a dead log. ‘Dear me, are Yu Huan’s little pets popping out of the woodwork one by one? I remember that there was also a little taotie, where is it hiding? Haha, no matter, come over to my side. Ridge City will soon be purified by fire and reborn and then, everything here will belong to us.’

‘It’s true that Ridge City will be purified by fire and reborn, but nothing after that will belong to you,’ Song Lin stated. ‘You and those Shuren behind you, go back to where you came from.’

Dandan raised his head, looked at his side profile and thought admiringly: gosh, so cool.

The Crone was briefly surprised and silent for a while before she suddenly brought her walking stick heavily down onto the ground, ordering, ‘Charge!’

Behind her, the grey-caped figures numbering in the tens of thousands came charging at them, a malignant sea which blotted out the sky and covered the earth. Everyone immediately held their weapons aloft and plunged into the fighting.

Present moment, Crescent Moon Ridge.

It was in the dead of night. Everyone seemed to have been utterly exhausted after surviving the disaster so they were all sleeping heavily.

Two figures were slinking around in the Chamber of Daoist Treasures.

‘Damnit, the Priest’s Manor really lives up to its name. These are all extremely rare treasures, I’ve only ever heard tales of them.’

The man with the injured left arm picked up a coloured glaze bottle and admired it by the light of the moon.

‘It’s just so unfair for the High Priest to have so many treasures all to himself,’ the man with the head injury groused.

‘Where’s that Book of All Things which we saw in the daytime? Hurry up and look for it! It won’t do if someone finds us here.’

‘I know, I’m looking for it now.’

The man continued to ransack the shelves while grumbling under his breath, ‘It’s really unfair. Some people are just sitting on mountains of gold and silver while we’re at the absolute bottom without a penny to our names.’

‘All right, enough of your bellyaching. After tonight, we’ll have everything.’

‘Found it!’ The man with the head injury pulled a book off the shelf. On the book cover was a fish fast asleep.

‘With this, we won’t have to fear the Shuren any more.’ The man slipped the book into his clothes.

‘Take all these treasures away as well!’ The other man produced a sack and began sweeping the contents displayed in a glass cupboard lock, stock and barrel² into the sack.

‘Enough, enough, let’s go.’

‘Wait! Just a few more!’

‘It’s too heavy to carry!’

‘It’s a rare chance, so we should take everything that we can carry! Damn it, letting the High Priest have so many treasures here is really letting him off lightly.’

Just then, they suddenly heard a voice saying slowly in ominous tones, ‘What’s this about… taking everything you can carry?’

Both of them almost jumped out of their skins and shouted, ‘Who’s there!’

The lights were turned on suddenly and the High Priest’s imposing figure appeared in the doorway. He was looking extremely displeased and glared at them, anger apparent in every word. ‘That’s why I knew it would be a very bad idea to have people like you under my roof.’

The two of them retreated a little fearfully.

One of them said, ‘H-High Priest… you have so many treasures here, surely it’ll be okay to let us have some? We’re nowhere as powerful as you are and if the Shuren should attack this place, we’ll need to protect ourselves as well.’

‘Right, we just want to protect ourselves.’

Feng Chulian’s eyes darkened. ‘I took you all in out of kindness, but you actually repay me by stealing from my Chamber of Daoist Treasures? Hng?’ He flicked his sleeves and a gust of air rose instantly, pushing the two of them back and slamming them against the wall. ‘Are you wretches even worthy of touching the things in here?’

The man with the head injury was cradling his head and shivering but the other one suddenly nudged him and whispered, ‘The High Priest’s spiritual energy was a little weak just now and he wasn’t too steady on his feet.’

‘Really? … You mean the High Priest is just bluffing? Surely not?’

‘There have long been rumours that the High Priest’s illness is incurable. But because he never failed to turn up for the ceremony to pray for rain every year and no one could see anything wrong with him, nobody took the rumour seriously. But now it looks like this High Priest really isn’t what he used to be.’ The man with the injured arm smiled briefly and fished out a dagger from the sack. ‘Let me test him.’ After saying that, he suddenly threw the dagger. Feng Chulian was startled and ducked sideways, but the dagger still grazed his long white robe and tore a gash in his sleeve.

Both the men stared in astonishment. The High Priest’s spiritual power was said to shield his body so how could a small dagger like that tear a hole in his long gown? So it was true… he was no longer as powerful as the legends held. Both of them thus stood up, secure in the fact that they had nothing to fear. They slung the sack over their shoulders with one commenting scornfully, ‘Having lived this long, it’s about time you grew old, Your Excellency.’

‘You’re already so weak but still putting on airs³? Whom are you trying to impress?’

Feng Chulian’s eyes were stormy. ‘Put down The Book of All Things. It’s not something scum like you can touch.’

The expression on both men’s faces turned ugly. ‘Ridge City is already doomed and who knows if we can survive until tomorrow. Who cares who was the original owner of all these? Whoever gets them is the owner! You’ve been the High Priest for so long and enjoyed the people’s veneration while also possessing Crescent Moon Ridge and the Chamber of Daoist Treasures. Don’t you think that it’s about time you let us enjoy some of it as well?’

‘You have some nerve! Did I say you could leave?’

‘Your Excellency, you don’t seem to realise it yet. You’re no longer a match for us.’ Both men laughed and summoned their own magic weapons.

Just then, a voice suddenly called from outside the door, ‘Teacher!’ The door was then abruptly flung open by Bi An who took one look at the weapons the men were brandishing, then at the tear in Feng Chulian’s gown and was instantly furious. ‘How dare you harm my teacher?!!’

With a sweep of his arms, both men were knocked down by a force which came out of thin air. At the same time, all the sharp weapons in the cupboard came flying out, shattering the glass and then stabbing the men’s legs which instantly looked like a hornet’s nest. The chamber was immediately filled with their screams of pain.

In the end, Bi An literally kicked both of them out.

He then clutched Feng Chulian’s wrist and yelled, ‘How could you do such a dangerous thing alone?! What if you had been hurt?!’

Feng Chulian was too stunned by his shouting to react and at length, blinked and coughed softly before saying, ‘I’m… all right…’

‘And it’s a good thing you are, otherwise I would have killed those two.’

Feng Chulian did not reply but merely gazed silently at Bi An — how strange, but why did he suddenly feel like this disciple of his had grown up?

  1. Omg, I like Phantom. XD Such a character. The way Dandan rubbed his face against Song Lin was pretty cute, but also kind of gross when you consider the saliva… :D;; Good thing Song Lin has more patience than I do.

    Ughh, right, Phantom was Yu Huan’s too. We focus so much on Dandan because he’s the MC, but really, how did Yu Huan’s other spirit beasts feel about him dying? Must have been awful all around. I cry over how Dandan’s only keeping calm because of Song Lin–such a steadying influence that the flighty Dandan needs. ;O;

I KNEW THEY WERE UP TO NO GOOD!!!! People like that, who are so ungrateful to the people helping them, are better off dead imo. 8|

GO BI AN!!!! I’M SCREECHING, HOW COOL. Though now I’m wondering what the heck is up with Feng Chulian. Hm.

    Thanks for the translation!

    1. Haha, yes, Phantom is hilarious. Everyone’s a potential customer 😂

If even Phantom could lose his cool, I think that says something about the depth of the bond they had with Yu Huan, and how painful it must have been to see him die. 😭

So true, Dandan does need a steadying hand from time to time.

Ha, those looters got what they deserved… Bi An sure doesn’t believe in half measures!

      💕💕 My pleasure!
