Ch. 65 | Song Fuyan’s spirit beast

Grey-caped spectral figures numbering in the tens of thousands were rushing towards the Guardians. Ye Ziran drew out two pistols and fired, causing the heads of two Shuren to explode. After a glance at the heads of the Song, the Bai, the Liang and the Wanyan clans beside him who had shifted into battle-ready stances, he said with marked distaste, ‘Never thought that I would have to fight side by side with you all today. Song Lin brandished his long sword, cutting in half a Shuren which had rushed at him, resulting in the black fluid splattering him. ‘The feeling is mutual¹!’

‘Trust me, my hatred of you is equally strong.’ Song Lin caught hold of a Shuren’s leg, swung it round once, pushed it into the ground directly and stamped on it twice for good measure. Then he easily summoned a wind blade to slice in half a Shuren which had been sneaking up on Ye Ziran.
Ye Ziran turned round, saw this and abruptly flared up. ‘Don’t need you to save me!!!’
‘Too bad, you’re weaker than me,’ Song Lin shrugged.
‘Who are you calling weak?’ Ye Ziran aimed his pistols at Song Lin’s forehead, declaring, ‘If the Guardians’ Tournament hadn’t been called off, I would have made sure you wouldn’t be able to get up again at the Don’t-Miss arena!’
Song Lin slapped the pistols aside, stating, ‘You should be grateful that the Guardians’ Tournament was called off, otherwise all the people of Ridge City would be witnessing just how greatly inferior you are to me.’
‘Are you two done?’ Bai Yini flicked her Shuiyun Sleeves at a group of Shuren rushing at them, wrapping the Shuren up and flinging them far away. ‘You can quarrel as much as you want after we’ve dealt with these fellows.’
‘I can’t be bothered even to quarrel with him,’ Ye Ziran said as he raised his gun and shot another Shuren. ‘But this is my thirty-eighth kill.’ He then looked arrogantly at Song Lin.
Song Lin had just severed two Shuren in half and calmly turned his head to report his numbers, ‘Excuse me, that was my forty-fifth kill.’
‘…’ Ye Ziran turned purple with rage. ‘Are you making it up?’
‘Nope.’ Song Lin split open another Shuren and said, ‘Now it’s forty-six.’
‘Damn you!’ Ye Ziran held up his middle finger.
Bai Yini just couldn’t stand them any longer and rolled her eyes as she asked Song Fuyan, ‘Why bring these two childish idiots along to the battle?’
Song Fuyan replied, ‘I’m used to it. They’ve always been like that.’
At this moment, Liang Luoheng manipulated a tree branch which allowed him to rise high up into the air where he could look down and see the entire scene of battle. All the Shuren that they had killed earlier were slowly coagulating together and resurrecting. He said with a frown, ‘This is just a never-ending loop of death! There’s no way we can defeat them.’
Dandan asked Bijou, ‘Can you freeze time for them?’
‘My ability to freeze time expends a lot of spiritual energy and the farthest I can control is up to ten metres,’ Bijou answered. ‘Moreover, there are too many of them so there’s no way for me to control them.’
Just then, the Crone raised her walking stick high into the air and a gigantic fire dragon flew out from behind her, breathing flames like magmatic flows which instantly swept up all the Guardians’ weapons into the air which were then swept behind the Crone. The Shuren behind immediately snatched the weapons for themselves and seemed very pleased with them as they stroked the weapons repeatedly.
Song Fuyan’s cultivated ability did not require any weapons. He motioned with both hands above the ground and an illusory eagle lifted him into the air. He gestured with his left hand and the eagle beat its wings, resulting in a hurricane which sent all the Shuren in front of him flying. The Crone struck the ground with her walking stick like a stabilizing force² and remained absolutely still. A protective screen appeared in front of her and blocked the wind, then she gestured in turn which drove the powerful wind backwards, dispersing Song Fuyan’s eagle. Being an illusion in the first place, the eagle turned into a puff of white smoke. The Crone then redirected the fire dragons which opened their mouths wide and flew towards Song Fuyan.

‘Brother!’ Song Lin roared, preparing to leap up while Dandan shouted, ‘Song Lin! You don’t have a weapon, going there means certain death!’
The truth is, none of them had any weapons on them and Song Fuyan was in mid-air. The fire dragons were moving too quickly and they just wouldn’t be able to reach him in time!
Just then, a sending circle suddenly appeared beneath Styx’s feet while another appeared simultaneously beside Song Fuyan. A glow surrounded the latter before Styx emerged in front of him, a very long and ancient bronze staff flashing into view in his hands. The dragon’s mouth was already before him and he shoved the raised staff directly into its mouth. An instant later, a loud bang was heard and the dragon’s head exploded while Styx shielded Song Fuyan and escorted him back to the ground.
Dandan, mouth agape³, pointed at Styx and gasped, ‘A sending circle? You’re… you’re Song Fuyan’s bonded spirit beast???’
An egg could have fitted into his mouth at that moment.
Song Lin was just as astonished for not even he had not known about it either. He had always thought that Styx was a Guardian.

Dandan walked up to them and scrutinised Styx, asking, ‘Ol’ Fish Eyes… which tribe of spirit beasts are you from?’
Right then, the Crone summoned ten fire dragons again and sent the whole lot hurtling towards them.
Styx replied, ‘You’ll know in a moment.’ He flew upwards and transformed into his original state: his entire body was bathed in a golden light… he was a mythical bird with golden feathers and immortal eyes.
Dandan covered his mouth and gulped, completely bowled over by the magnificent transformation before him. ‘My god… you’re actually a… phoenix!!!’

Omg, Ye Ziran, why not banter in the middle of a fight… Also, Song Lin doing the same made me laugh a lot. Good rivals! At first I was a bit leery of Ye Ziran, but this entire exchange made me feel better, haha.

AAAA STYX IS SONG FUYAN’S BONDED SPIRIT BEAST. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN YET SOMEHOW I DID NOT. AND HE’S A PHOENIX. OF COURSE. …He doesn’t really fit a phoenix in my head, but this works too, LOL.

Same here, I was surprised by the reveal even though there were a couple of clues in the earlier chapters so it makes sense when you look back on it. Still, nice to be surprised so late in the story 😆. I think the author just wanted something mythical hehe! He is kind of on the dour side 🤭 but maybe that’s why it’s such a good cover!
